Description
Grant's Green Home by Lynn Sprowl
The Paris Green color dates to the 1870s, and was quite popular during that era. Paint sampling and historic store ledgers confirm that this was indeed the color of the house. Some of the original paint is visible on the back porch, inside the mud room.
Ulysses S. Grant is known as the victorious Civil War general who saved the Union and the 18th President of the United States. He served two terms as president. From 1854 to 1859 the Dents, Grants and an enslaved African-American workforce lived on the property.
The interpretation of slavery in White Haven is an important component of naming these properties as a national historic site. When Grant and his wife lived in this 19th-century farm, his experience with slaves influenced his role as a Union general who fought to abolish the peculiar institution. He continued on his mission when he became a President of the United States.
