Built 1872-1873, this French Renaissance native limestone building is the oldest working courthouse in the state of Kansas. During the decade following the Civil War, Chase County residents knew their county had outgrown its log cabin courthouse and makeshift jail. At a special election in August 1871, thirteen years after the county's formation and with a population of about 600, voters approved a $40,000 bond levy for a new courthouse and jail. Native limestone, used in the building, has also been shipped to every state in the country where it may be found in scores of famous public structures, including the Capitol building in Washington D.C. and the Topeka State Capitol building. Each year visitors from many states and foreign countries visit the Courthouse, marveling at its architectural design, the stonework, and the spiral staircase in the same way the pioneers did in 1873. For me, photography is about what I "feel" when I see an image. I want my photo to capture…a mood, an emotion, a story. I have a wide range of subjects that I like to photograph but tend to look at the ordinary. Like most photographers, I love nature and the splendid array of opportunities and subjects provided. I find the “abandoned” is a constant source of intrigue and make for interesting photography. I find beauty and mystery in the ordinary. Shooting in RAW format is a key element in my post-processing. The additional steps allow me to edit exposure, contrast, color and brightness without any reduction of quality.
