Description
Yard Hawk by Lynn Sprowl
There were three of these keeping an eye on my girls last summer. I have two Cairn Terriers, and my Cairn group warns us every year, to keep our dogs safe. These have been known to swoop down to get a domestic dog. I don't leave my girls outside by themselves. I can't imagine either of them being taken by this bird of prey...just scares me!
These birds are protected. The fine is $15,000.00 and/or 6 months in prison.
Found in fields, especially near woodlots close to farms and cities. Not a bird of the deep woods, it is usually found in grasslands or marsh-shrub habitats. It also found in urban areas. Red-tailed hawks typically do not begin breeding until their third year.

Thank you so much, Catherine. I keep an eye out for these birds. I can't imagine one of them hurting my dogs.

Great capture of this magnificent bird, Lynn! Conveniently in your yard, but also scary for your dogs' safety! F

They hung around my house for days. I really had to keep an eye on my lil dogs. Very Scary. Thank you for your kind comment.
