Description
New Isis Theater by Lynn Sprowl.
Driving in the Stockyard District of Fort Worth, Texas was amazing. I would have enjoyed going in the evening much better, however, I was on my way home from a visit with friends and family and home is a long drive.
Opening May 21, 1914 as the 400-seat impressive Isis Theater, designed by architect Louis B. Weinman. Located in the Historic Stockyards district in Fort Worth, it was sadly destroyed by a fire in 1935. The theater was rebuilt and enlarged to the plans of architect W. Scott Dunne. With seating for 1,000, it reopened March 27, 1936 as the New Isis Theater with Fort Worth native and super-star, Ginger Rogers in “In Person”.
Then in 1942, Marine Creek flooded the Stockyards area bringing a wash of mud and water damage to the theater resulting in extensive repairs. It finally closed in 1988 and was ‘For Sale’ for many years, becoming more neglected and dilapidated as time passed. Purchased by Dr. Jeffrey Smith and his wife Debbie in 2017, outside/inside renovations and restoration began, preserving any pieces that were salvageable.
Now you can visit this historic theater and share in the excitement. With 500 patron seating and a retractable screen, 37 feet wide by 16-feet high, this venue appeals to many. You can view classic blockbusters daily and catch live performances in the evenings. Downtown Cowtown at the Isis opened May 28, 2021 giving long awaited new life to this corner in the Historic Stockyards.
