Description
Candle and Holder by Lynn Sprowl.
Found this candle and holder on a table in one of the remaining barracks at Fort Osage in Missouri. Military reenactors used these for lighting.
Built under the direction of General William Clark, joint commander of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition, Fort Osage was established in 1808 as a military outpost in the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. The Fort’s purpose was to provide a military presence in the territory in order to assure Spain, France and Great Britain that the United States meant to protect its territory by military strength and to establish healthy relations with the Native American population in the territory. The Factory building and the remaining four blockhouses, officer's quarters, soldier's barracks, and surrounding log stockade were completed in the 1950's and 1960's. Fort Osage was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an archaeological district because of significant Hopewell and Osage Indian sites neighboring the Fort. The National Park Service also designates Fort Osage as a certified site of the Santa Fe and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trails.
