Description
Berclair Mansion by Lynn Sprowl
The Berclair Mansion was built in 1936 by Mrs. Etta Wilkinson Terrell. She was 75 years old when construction of the mansion began! It was intended from the beginning to be a home for the five sisters to live out their Golden years. It is constructed of over 60 tons of concrete and structural steel with what was the latest in plumbing, heating and electricity of the time. The home consists of two floors, a basement and an attic. There are 10 bedrooms, 4 full and 2 half bathrooms, a grand reception room, formal and informal living and dining rooms, 2 sets of staircases and an elevator that is original to the home.
After the death of the last of the five sisters in 1975, the mansion was willed to Miss Etta's niece, Genevieve Moore. Genevieve passed away in 1997 with no children. In her will she left instructions for the contents to be given to a museum and the house destroyed. The heirs were able to have this part of her will set aside and in June 2000 the mansion was given to the non-profit organization the Beeville Art Association.
