Description
A Road Less Traveled
The controlled burn in the Flint Hills had many amazing sights. This fire went right over this road leaving only the tire tracks.
The tallgrass prairie biome depends on prairie fires, a form of wildfire, for its survival and renewal. Tree seedlings and intrusive alien species without fire tolerance are eliminated by periodic fires. Such fires may either be set by humans (for example, Native Americans used fires to drive bison and improve hunting, travel, and visibility) or started naturally by lightning. Researchers' attempts to re-establish small sections of tallgrass prairie in arboretum fashion were unsuccessful until they began to use controlled burns.

This was an interesting event. Learned a lot. Our cameras had to be protected from the smoke and suet.

Fantastic colors emerge from this smoke filled sky blocking the sun filled with movement of smoke, winds and light and the darkness of where fire raced, yet juxapositioned to the burnt sienna grasses still in place. I see the fire tuffs licking at the grasses. Great story here, Lynn! Love it! L/f
